Kick-Ass
For the script the director, Matthew Vaughn had asked Mark Miller, writer of the comic book to write the comic and he would write the script. the script and comic did have differences, for example the actor who plays 'kick-ass' in the film is acting to be gay and trying to get a girl and when he confesses to her she then 'likes' him but in the comic she tells him to 'fuck off'. the film was shot in a school and there were over 300 extras who were each specifically chosen for a certain look. the film took about a year and a half to shoot.
The film was based on the comic book which had previously been released in 2008 and also the last comic which was released about 6 weeks before the film came out.
the problems that they face when making the film was that they had to make it a certificate 15 and as the film was supposed to be aimed at audiences of 14 year old boys, this caused a problem, another problem was that they cast a 12 year old girl who swears quite a bit in the film and this caused people to disagree with both the swearing and the fact that the target audience couldn't view the film.
the directors view on the british film industry is that he believes that britain could have the largest film industry in the world and in only a few years time, he says about 3. the way in which he says this can be possible is for film directors to stop taking high levels of £20,000,000 up front, and take only £5,000,000 and also says that we have the best films just not the best industry.
the film is set in Manhattan and to save money they decided to shoot the film in the UK. for this to be possible they had to use high resolution pictures of Manhattan and put them onto large green screens to make it seem as if the film was actually filmed in Manhattan, this saved money as it would cost quite alot to have the strrets of Manhattan closed down for filming which is why they decided to shoot in the UK.
The technology they used were high resolution pictures as i have previously said and tese were put onto huge green screens to make the setting of Manhattan in the UK. they also used the best sound recording so the actors never have to try and re-create the emotion of the moment on a stage later on.
As the film is rated a 15, it is not a 4 quadrant film, and also as the audience it was aimed at were unable to see it, they found it difficult to get into the screenings, they had to purchase a ticket for other films such as 'how to train your dragon'. however even though this was the case, the film did quite well as it made back its budget and had a tidy profit of about $7,000,000 and was seen as a successful film.
there were no major controversies concerning the film except some little ones about how the girl swears alot and that the film seemed to advertise weapons as two of the characters of the film had a room full of weapons on the wall and these two characters were the good guys.
the creators of the film saw the marketing and promotion of the film to be bad as they belived that it was marketed wrongly. For example, audiences who saw trailers of the film only saw the humor parts of the film as this was all that was put into the trailers and so when they went to see the film they thought it was just going to be another funny film like Date Movie etc. the reason for this was maybe because the comic was not well known and so unlike spiderman or hulk comics, the audiences didn't have any previous knowledge of what could be shown in the film.
there were many different artists music put into the soundtrack of the film, from artists like Elvis to The Prodigy. although this added to the dimensions of the film it was also seen as not being the films own music. also the opening scene of the film begins similarly to superman when the writing is in the clouds and this may have been seen to others as a copy of superman.

Ethnicity In A TV Drama
I have chosen to look at Eastenders as a t.v drama. One of the ethenic groups within Eastenders is Zainabs family who are Muslims. They are represented as an average day to day family within the show except within their house they encounter many problems. For example one of the sons Syed is gay and this is not acceptable within the Muslim Community and so his family disown him as their son as they do not want him to be like this, even though he cannot help what he is. As they follow the way of Allah they feel they must not let him into their life which is sad as he is a nice person but it is their religion which they feel they must follow more than anything else. The mother Zainab is quite a fierce and strict woman, which helps to keep her family in line, the father Massood is represented as a nice guy and hardly ever gets angry but when he does he sticks to his point and never really backs down, and the other son Tamwar is represented as a normal teenager with normal teenage problems and his real goal is just to have a girlfriend.
Ethnicity
In TV drama the ethenic minorities are portryed through their stereotypes which are;
Mexicans; they are regarded as having ponchos, sombreros, eating nachos, drinking tequilla slammers.
Irish; they are known to drink Guiness, growing potatoes, being gypsies, having Leprecorns associated with their nationality, an Irish accent and being called Paddy.
Indians; they tend to eat curry, also wearing Hijab, having Henna tattoos, arranged marriages is popular within their culture, also they have many kids.
Americans; there are different sterotypes for Americans as there are white Americans and also Native Americans. The native Americans or 'Red Indians' as they were formally known tend to be very spiritual and believe in sprits. Americans on the other hand tend to be quite fat and eat alot of junk food, they also are quite ignorant, racist and quite patriotic.
English; they are represented as being snobby, drinking tea all of the time, chav's, posh, fish and chips, driving mini coopers.
Black people; they tend to wear bandanas, be quite athletic, be hooligans, violent to their girlfriends, drug dealers.
Muslims; they tend to be represented as being terrorists, they also cover there faces with what is religious clothing.

Kidulthood
The first camera angle of the film is a close up looking at the feet of a person kicking a football. this shows that it is a school playground as we can hear noises in the background of a school and also immediately after this shot there is a shot of girls in a school uniform.
Another shot used is a panning shot which is used to see different students in the playground and the camera moves from group to group at about eye level.
There is a shot in the film of a drill and for this shot an extreme close up camera angle is used and all we can see is the drill, and we are not sure why the drill is being used or what is actually being drilled which causes slight tension as an audience would want to know what is being drilled.
About 4 minutes into the film there is a scene where a girl is being bullied in the classroom and at one point we see a POV shot where we can see the bullies in the point of view of the person getting bullied and this lets us know how 'in your face' the bullies are being and how nasty it is to be in this situation.
We also have an over the shoulder shot while the fight is happening and this is over the shoulder of a student who is about center of the classroom and this lets us see the fight as if we were standing in the classroom with the other students.
At 5 minutes into the film when one of the bullies shouts at the girl for 'answering back' we see the bully in a low angle shot to make her seem more superior than the girl, and shows that she is dominant over her and can do what she wants, whenever she wants and the girl cannot stop her.

Moon
The film Moon was created by Duncan Jones and stars Sam Rockwell as the main character and also Kevin Spacey who does the voice of Gerty, the robot. Spacey was only on set for half a day and yet still got the highest pay as he costs a lot to hire and Duncan Jones needed to keep costs down so tried to limit how long they had Spacey for. Duncan Jones wanted to use Sam Rockwell from the beginning but Sam didn't think it was for him but still wanted to work with Duncan so Duncan later came back with the script and cast Sam.
Moon had a small budget of $5,000,000 and to cut costs Duncan had a very small cast of 2 main characters and the film was finished in 33 days. Bill Pearson created a 360-degree set of the moon for the shooting. Duncan cut some corners during editing by using companies such as Cinesite which is well known for having cheap costs for its independent films. They finally kept costs down by not sending any reales to the OSCAR committee and so it was hard to see what the professional world thought of the film.
overall the film took in $9,747,108 worldwide and the UK was almost a 5th of that. it may seem that they made a profit but in-fact they didn't as Duncan had to pay off his debts and so all the profit had to go towards this and this is because he had to borrow quite a bit of money and he borrowed it from a variety of places and so the intrest on top of this would add to his debts.
Casualty
The first episode of series 25 of Casualty is called 'No Place Like Home'.
there are many different kinds of characters in this episode and so i can apply this to Vladimir Propp's theories e.g. the hero, anti-hero and villain, donor and many more up to 32 different types.
the character Nick Jordan played by Michael French i would say is the hero in it because he has some authority over some of the others but uses it in a good way and doesn't act superior to the others, he just gets on with the job and does his best.
Tess Bateman played by Suzanne Packer i would say is the donor of the program because she has been in the program for about 7 years and she doesn't have high authority like Nick Jordan and her position is to help the doctors which helps understand why she would be the donor. we see in the show that she is always helping people even when she doesn't have to which reinforces the theory of her being the donor.

Moon - Audience
The film Moon is not a 4 quadrant film as it has a certificate of 15. I think that the films audience would mainly be males as it is a science fiction film, based on the moon itself, and it tends to be males who watch sci-fi films, and also there are no main female roles in the film and so this would decrease female audience.
the main actor Sam Rockwell is not a well known actor in the movie business and so the film would not appeal to some people, but as they know Kevin Spacey is involved in the film then the film will be more appealing to poeple.
the film, directed by Ducan Jones, son of David Bowie, never really advertised the film properly and so this kept his costs down, however this meant that the public couldn't find out about the film through television or cinema and had to hear it from other people.
Duncan Jones was unable to afford good special effects and the highest amount he spent on special effects which was also the highest costing part of the film was when Sam was playing table tennis with himself and the scene was only a few seconds long, and for the rest of the film he used a double so we never really saw his face when they were together as much e.g. when they were fighting.

Vladimir Propp & other theorists.
Vladimir Propp
he believed some narratives have character roles and functions.
he analysed a whole series of Russian folk tales in the 1920's and decided that the same events kept being repeated in each of the stories, creating a consistent framework.
Main Theories:
the villain; who struggles with the hero (formally known as the antagonist)
the donor
the helper
the princess,
a sought-for person (and/or her father) who exists as a goal and often recognises and marries hero and/or punishes villain
the dispatcher
the hero; who departs on a search (seeker-hero), reacts to the donor and weds
the false hero (antihero or usurper) who claims to be the hero, often seeking and reacting like a real hero (i.e by trying to marry the princess)
Life On Mars
Hero- Sam Tyler
Villain- Collin Reams
Princess- Myia
False Hero- Gene Hunt
Roland Barthe
- born: 12 November 1915
- died: 1980
- French theorist, philosopher, critic and semiotician
- he had a license in grammer and philosophy
- 1953 he made his full length work writing degree zero
- theories: cultural, action, symbolic and enigma
Todorov
- born: 1 March 1939
- he had influences from the 1960's and further
- published 21 books
- theories: - stories start with an equal balance of opposing forces
- the balance is then thrown by an event
- this causes a problem which needs to be solved
- for life on mars: gets trapped in the past through the car crash and then he tries to solve the problem by getting back to thecurrent day
Levi-Strauss
- French theorist
- dies at the age of 100
- around the war period he was very influential
- theory: there are always binary opposites in films
- life on mars: the obvious contrast between the 70's and the present day

Merlin
'What representations of gender are constructed by the extract through the use of; Mise en scene/editing/use of camera/sound?'
At the beginning of the clip we see a young man and from this point we know that it is going to be about him as we hear a narrator as a voice over talking about this 'young man' and how he can form his destiny. As he is a male we can see that this programme is going to focus mainly on men as it is about men. About 30 seconds into the clip we see a king on his throne and he says 'my kingdom' which shows that he is in power and men are rulers over women and the fact that he is king he is ruler of everyone. About 50 seconds into the clip we see an old woman turn into snakes which shows she is a witch and in those days women were very often the only ones to be accused of being a witch showing that they are less superior to men as little men would have been accused of sorcery. Towards the end of the clip when the title 'Merlin' comes up we hear a woman whisper 'Merlin' which makes it seem very mysterious and that maybe in the programme Merlin has to be mysterious and keep his magic a secret as we know if e king found out he would be killed and this is backed up afterwards by him saying 'shhh, keep the magic secret'.

Hot Fuzz, Whats British
http://www.tubechop.com/watch/97954
it wouldnt let me insert this video so i have had to just put a link to it.
in the opening scene of Hot Fuzz there is alot f things shown to show that it is British. The first of these are that we hear police sirens of the British police from about 20-30+ years ago and then British police sirens from our time now and this could show that the police force is changing, and this is happening whilst the titles are being shown. we are then taken to a corridor and see a silouette of a man walking towards the camera and as we see him we see that he is wearing a British police uniform and this shows that the films is going to be about the police. he then holds up a badge of the british police force and on the badge is a crown to represent the Queen which sows more Britishness. also the name nicholas is a well known british name.

Post production of magazine
For the Front cover of my magazine I inserted a photo of Harry Tibbles in which I cut around his body to delete out the background. After this I used the colour selector tool and chose the golden colour on his t shirt and en used this for the beckground of the magazine and edited it to have a fading effect where it faded out into a lighter colour coming from a diagonal angle. I then inserted a mast head reading 'Inspire' which is the name of the magazine and used the font verdana for this and then had it a large size and used a mix of black and gold and the colour to go with the background. I then inserted 4 different text boxes around the picture of Harry where I then typed in the four different articles which are on the front cover, where I then coloured them a dark red and black for so that the colours matched with the mast head and background. I then added the price of the magazine and a piece of text saying 'brand new issue' and this was a small verdant font and dark red colour and placed under the mast head. I then added a picture of a barcode which. Placed in the bottom right hand corner of the page where a barcode would normal go.
After this I moved onto the contents page where I used a similar mast head for the title which read 'contents' and had the same colours and size as the front pages mast head. I then inserted a text box and filled in the contents of the magazine and what page numbers they would be on and the font for this was the same as the articles on the front page which is again verdana and coloured this with a dark red. For the background I did a similar thing with the front page where I had the same colour but a different gradient and angle so that it wasn't exactly the same as the front page but similar to go with it. I then added two separate pictures of Jacob Kench and Oli Wrights heads and cut around them like I did with the picture of Harry and placed them both side by side at the bottom of the page. Above this was a picture of the new canteen which I inserted and this was on the right side of the page next to the text box of the contents which was on the left side of the page. I then added a small number 3 in the bottom right hand corner to show it was page 3 of the magazine and this was a white verdant font.

Production Of Magazine
For the production of the magazine, we began by taking photos using a digital camera, and these photos would then be put up on the magazine and contets page. The photos i took were of a Student with their arms stretched out, and this was for my front cover. The other photos i took were of the new canteen and a close up of two students faces looking in opposite directions, and this was for my contents page. i began my magazine front cover in photoshop by selecting a mast head which was the name of my magazine 'INSPIRE' and i edited this to have a verdana font and a golden/black colour to match the photo i would add. i then added a photo of a student and cut out the background and put him in the middle of the cover, his t-shirt had a golden/black colour which matched my mast head. i then did four seperate articles around the cover using black and dark red colours. For the background i used a gradient of gold and white and this went well with my colours i used for text and mast head.
For the contents i used the same font and style of mast head as the front cover and this one read 'CONTENTS'. i then typed into a text box like i did with the articles, the contents of my magazine and the pages they were ojn and used a dark read colour for all of this text. next to this i inserted a picture of the new canteen and resized it to fit well with its surroundings. at the bottom of the page i used two photos i had taken of different students and cut out the background, and placed rthem next to each other looking up in opposite directions. for the background of my contents page i used the same colour for the fronty cover but a slightly different gradient. i then added a page number '3' to the bottom right of the page to show that it is page 3.

Brief And Pre-Production
For our magazine we were given a brief which was to create a magazine cover and contents which would be suitable for the school. The front cover had to include a mid-shot of a chosen person, a mast head which had to be at the top and the font i will be using is Helvetica and this will be used for every other piece of text on the front and contents. on the front cover there will be the price, barcode and text boxes showing snaps or articles. these were then put on the contents page to whow which page they would be on. the photo of the person i have chosen is center of the cover and holding out their hands. the colours i have used are dark red, blue and some white. on my contents page there will be photos of two different peoples faces with thoughtful looks on their faces and this will be put at the bottom, a picture of the new canteen in the center and above this is the contents and pages they are on in a blue colour, font Helvetica. the mast head of the contents page will be a dark red helvetica font and will be at the top of the page. when we had finished our designs we went out and took the photos we needed, which would be used for our magazines.

Production
During the production, we were given another groups storyboard, which we had to create a film for, to show that we could understand a different storyboard than our own and use the detail on it well, to make a good film of different shots. On the first piece of paper used as the storyboard we could not understand where the 'phone' was to be in the scene because in the description of the frame it only mentions a phone but does not show what was needed to be done with it so we used our initiative and left out the phone but still had the shots the way they were written. We managed to have the characters do everything correctly and there was no difficulty in this part. We did however film one shot twice as laughter took over, but this was okay as we managed to do it in 2 take and we did not waste any time. For most of the shots we had the camera on the tripod at eye level for the mid shots of the character 'Oli' walking though the corridor, we then had a close up of the door being opened showing the arm and hand of Oli on the door. There was then a reverse shot if the character coming through the door from the other side. We then had a mid shot of the other character 'Harry' sitting down being approached by Oli. When both characters were sitting down the camera was moved to an over the shoulder shot and the tripod was shortened to stand on the bench next to Oli so that we could see Harry over his shoulder as Harry read out his dialogue, this then changed to an over the shoulder shot of Harry looking at Oli as he read his dialogue. The camera was not hard to use and we were able to get on well with each other while filming and directing, we were able to get around the details in the storyboard which were hard to understand and made a few things better.
Pre-Production
For our film, we have just drawn and written out a storyboard of 4 different sections, for 4 of us. We have each been allocated 4 frames each on the storyboard and so altogether we have 16 which show all of our shots. Our film is going to be of a character walking down a Corridor, towards a door, they will then be opening the door, walking through it and then sitting down at a desk or table, and another character will be greeting the first character to sit down. The 4 frames of the storyboard I have been allocated begins with the first character in the room and we see him/her in a long shot, with the top of the second characters head in the shot to give little detail of what they look like, it then goes into an over the shoulder shot of character 1 and we see character 2 is sitting in his chair facing the opposite way and character 2 then says 'welcome to my office' slowly with a deep voice, the next shot is then a mid shot of character 2 spinning in his chair and when he is centre of the shot, he then says 'take a seat', the final shot is a mid shot of both characters, looking at them from the side and character 1 moves towards the chair slowly, and says 'thank you' as he begins to walk to the chair, replying to character 2's request of sitting down.

The 5 C's Of Media
In films there are 5 different things to look out for which begin with C, these are;
Camera angles,
This is an example of a mid shot and shows good detail of the character in the shot but only a little detail of his surroundings,
This is an example of a long shot which shows a lot of a surrounding area and you can see many things in the shot, it is not just focused on one particular object, or character.
This is an example of a close-up and is focused on only one thing in the shot, in this case it is the mole and it gives the audience a detailed view of what the mole looks like closer to the camera.
This is an example of an extreme close up and shows a lot of detail of an object or character, and shows nothing of the surroundings, this is good for focusing on little detail which is hard to see from a further away
This is an example of a point of view shot which is used to make the audience feel like they are part of the action, or like they are in the film.
Continuity- this generally refers to the visual errors in a film or programme, in basic terms it means a character at one second could be wearing a scarf which is green, and the next could be wearing an orange one. So to have good continuity the editing must be very precise to make all the shots follow on properly and show everything as it should be as if it were real, to make the audience believe it is actually happening.
Cutting- This is also known as editing, it is highly necessary otherwise a film would never end, it also allows the director to change locations quickly, but it's main use is to either add pace into a scene to create an exiting atmosphere or slow it down for dramatic emphasis.
Close-ups, have been shown in camera angles (see above)
Composition- this is everything that is shown in the scene from the colour of the wallpaper, to the position of a table or chair. The audience might feel it makes no difference whether something is in a scene or not but everything in the scene has been put there for a reason.

HELLO
Good morrow, i have chosen to do media as an AS level because i enjoy watching films and listening to music. They are a good source for entertainment and enjoyment. My favourite artists are Michael Jackson, Enrique Iglesias and Eminem but there are many more I enjoy listening to. My favourite film is the Lion King and has been since I was younger, but I also enjoy many other films which tend to be comedies like 'Step Brothers' and 'American Pie' or action films like 'Transformers' and 'Terminator Salvation'. My favourite TV programmes are 'The Inbetweeners', 'Family Guy', all of the soaps, 'Skins' and 'celebrity Juice' which I think is hilarious. I do also like Twilight films, they are brilliant!
